You can now install Office 2016 on your Windows computer – the latest version of Microsoft’s Office Suite is available since September 22nd and can be downloaded. When installing Office 2016, however, there are a few points you need to be aware of. We’ll show you what these are in this article.
Installing Office 2016 – How to do it
Office 2016 is the new version of Microsoft’s Office suite and has been available in retail stores, as a direct download from the Microsoft Store, and as part of the Office 365 subscription since September 22. Depending on which version of Office 2016 you choose, the installation process will be slightly different:
The single license available in the store will include a product key, which you can enter on the following activation page.
If you purchase Office 2016 directly from the Microsoft Store, you can download the program there.
If you have an Office 365 subscription, log in with your Microsoft account and install Office 2016 on your personal page.
Important: To install Office 2016, you must have an Internet connection and a Microsoft account, no matter which version you choose. This account will also allow you to use Office 2016 features such as the OneDrive cloud storage service. To use the regular Office programs, you don’t have to log in with your account every time, the account is only needed for the installation.
If you purchased the previous version of Office 2013 as part of an Office 365 subscription, you can also wait until the program informs you about the upgrade option – you can find the corresponding message in the menu bar of the Office programs. However, this option is only available if you own Office 2013 as part of a subscription – single Office 2013 licenses do not offer the option to upgrade Office 2016 for free or at a discount. Tips on how to get Office 2016 without paying money can be found here: Upgrade to Office 2016 for free – that’s how.
In addition, when you install Office 2016, some old Office programs are removed – read more about that in the next section.
Skype for Business incompatible with Office 2016
When you install Office 2016, the following Office programs will be removed from your computer:
Skype for Business 2015
SharePoint Designer 2013
In some cases, users have reported that OneDrive has also been uninstalled. Problem: After installing Office 2016, it is no longer possible to reinstall and use these programs. Also, if you don’t have an Office 365 subscription, you won’t automatically receive the new versions of these programs and will have to purchase them separately or install the old versions on a different computer. Microsoft is currently working on a solution, for Skype for Business the company is already offering a workaround: You can download a stand-alone version of Skype for Business Installer from the following Microsoft support page. 32-or 64-bit version of Office 2016 install?
If you want to install Office 2016, you will need to choose either the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version – however, you will also need to make sure that you have installed the previous version of Office 2016 on your computer. For example, if this is the 32-bit version of Office 2013, you have the following options:
You are installing the 32-bit version of Office 2016
You uninstall the 32-bit version of Office 2013 and then install the 64-bit version of Office 2016.
This also applies if you have installed a specific version of standalone Office applications such as Visio: All Office applications must be either 32-bit or 64-bit – a combination is not possible and results in the following error message:
According to Microsoft, it is possible to combine applications from different Office versions, e.g. Office 2013 and Office 2016, if they are either 32-bit or 64-bit. As mentioned above, however, this can also cause problems, as some programs are simply removed during installation.

Using Office 2016 in Windows 10
Office 2016 is fully compatible with Windows 10, but there may be some problems using Office 2016 in Windows 10. If you use an Office 2016 application to access Office 365 tools such as SharePoint Online or Exchange Online, you must provide your Office 365 account information. In this case, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft is still working on a solution, the previous workaround is not to start Office 2016 in Windows 10 as administrator, if you use the above mentioned applications.
